Introduction Alaska is ranked 47th among the 50 states of United States and is situated in the northwest extremity of North America. Alaska was the 49th state admitted to this union in 1959. Alaska is governed as a republic. The government of Alaska consists of three branches an Executive Board which consists of the governor of Alaska and other independently elected constitutional members, a legislative branch which consists of 40-members representing the Alaska House of Representatives and 20-members representing Alaska Senate. The Governor of Alaska and Senators serve four years term whereas the House of Representatives serve only for two years. The Alaska state employees more than 15, 0000 employees statewide. The working of the lieutenant governor and the Governor is separate during the primary period while at the time of election the nominees for both posts are run on the same ticket. The court of Alaska consists of four levels- the Alaska Supreme court, the court of appeals, the superior courts and the district courts. Superior courts come under courts of general jurisdiction while hearing of cases like misdemeanor civil cases and criminal cases valuing till $100, 000 come under the district court. The Supreme Court and the court of Appeals are appellate courts as they hears only the appeals from certain lower courts including criminal cases, juvenile delinquency, and habeas corpus. The Supreme Court hears civil appeals and may hear criminal appeals.
