Introduction Bethel is located along the Androscoggin River in the western mountains of Maine, 70 miles northwest of Portland and 15 miles from the New Hampshire border. Bethel is at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River, in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.
It derives its name from the Hebrew “house of God.” The town comprises a total area of 67.2 square miles.
Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge located in Bethel is the largest wildlife refuge in the nation. Bethel serves as an administrative and transportation hub for 56 villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
